★ — INDUSTRY TRENDS
The future of digital humans.
The digital human industry in 2031 looks nothing like 2021. Five forces are converging: real-time everywhere, browser-grade fidelity, ethics frameworks, volumetric capture, and embodied AI. Here's what that means.
Real-time everywhere
Pre-rendered shots will be the exception, not the rule. Audio2Face / NeuroSync have already pushed lipsync to sub-100ms; expect the entire body — gait, gesture, micro-expression — to be runtime-driven by 2027.
For brands this means: every customer touchpoint becomes a candidate for embodied AI. For film and games: real-time previs collapses into final shot.
Browser-grade photoreal
WebGPU + lightweight neural lipsync will bring photoreal embodied agents to the open web with no install required. EquipVerse already ships WebGL builds for AI Agent Embodiment; expect this to be table stakes by 2027.
Apple Vision Pro and Quest 3 are the leading edge today; the browser is where the volume scales.
Volumetric capture meets MetaHuman
USD-native pipelines are connecting volumetric capture (4D Views, Microsoft Mesh, Apple's Persona system) to MetaHuman skeletons. By 2027 expect productionised hero characters with hand-captured deformation cycles to be standard.
Ethics frameworks
Every major market now requires AI-presenter disclosure (EU AI Act, US state laws, UK Online Safety Act). Expect these to harden — and the industry to bifurcate clearly between sourced/consented (legitimate) and scraped (deepfake / illegal) practice.
