What is a MetaHuman?

A MetaHuman is a photoreal digital human built using Epic Games' MetaHuman framework — designed to run in real time inside Unreal Engine 5. Released free in 2021, it democratised cinema-grade CG character production from a six-figure bespoke craft to a five-figure productionised service.

The basics

Before MetaHuman, every photoreal CG human was hand-crafted from scratch by a tier-1 VFX studio over six months at a $100K+ budget. Avatar, the Apes franchise, the Mandalorian — all bespoke.

Epic Games released the MetaHuman framework in 2021 as a free toolkit: a parametric base mesh, a rig, a hair groom system, and a wardrobe library. Anyone can sculpt a custom likeness onto it and ship a real-time character.

What makes it special

MetaHuman runs in real time at cinema fidelity. That means you can light it with Lumen, animate it with Live Link Face from an iPhone, drive it with AI-generated voice through Audio2Face — all at sub-100ms latency on consumer hardware.

It also exports cleanly to Maya, Blender, Houdini, Unity and Apple Vision Pro via USD. Pipeline-friendly is a polite way of saying: it actually works in production.

Where you see them

Today MetaHumans appear in: TV ads (virtual brand ambassadors), AAA games (NPCs and supporting cast), virtual production stages (LED-volume backgrounds), AI agents (embodied chatbots), virtual influencers (Instagram, TikTok), broadcasting (AI news anchors), and increasingly in feature film as digital doubles and de-aged actors.
